California Studio - the 'Desert Hut'

This is an interior shot of my studio in Twentynine Palms, California, known as the 'Desert Hut'.

The painting on the right is 'Competition', the painting on the left is a portrait with a series of other canvases that are stapled to the wall beneath it.

When working like this, the painting on top leaves a residue on the painting directly under it. Architects often speak of the notion of palimpsest, where an aspect of the city or a previous building are left as a residual element in a new architectural construction. Extending this concept to painting, I'm discovering similar possibilities with the stacking and subsequent removal of paintings stapled directly to the wall one atop another.

This image can give you a sense of the various scales of work that I'm engaged in developing, ranging from small sketches to what I would call mid-sized canvases.

New sketch - 03-06-2010

This is a 3 minute preliminary sketch for a new painting I'm developing, 'The Race'.  It is also an experiment using pastels with water.

I drew the white lines in to see how they worked going over a dark area.  It didn't work so well where the paper was fully saturated, but was better after a first pass removed some of the water, or where the paper wasn't as wet.

The original black line work on the figures was done dry - just wanted to see how it held up by soaking it in water.

Current work, week of November 1, 2009

Computer was down last week (actually, it took a trip to Houston while I stayed home painting), so here's a little of what I was up to while I've been away - new paintings!

Also, am starting to work on some printmaking techniques, and will post those later in the week.

This is a photo of my current work. Let me know what you think of it.

Also, I have some images uploaded in Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/people/grubbsartist/

More coming soon

Here's a shot of my current work in progress. Its a large (7' x 5'6") format oil painting of an idea that I've been working on over the past couple of years. I had prepared several sketches a while back, started to evolve the concept using various media, and now I'm in the process of working it out at full scale.

Yes, I work on larger canvases outside - this is my studio in Arizona, and the weather this time of year is favorable. I have several outbuildings and an indoor studio as well. I'll show more of the facility in future blogs.

Check back for updates; I'll be posting new images daily as they're available.
